PSG crowned Ligue 1 title was given to Paris Saint Germain after French football chiefs agreed to cancel remaining of the 2019/20 season due to the coronavirus pandemic.
There were no celebrations for the title. Instead, there was just a formal ruling from league executives that provided another example of how the coronavirus has upended sports across the world.
League President, Nathalie Boy de la Tour, said that:
There is no ambiguity about this declaration. We needed to make a final decision about this season. We have (acknowledged) the end of the 2019-20 season and we have awarded the league title to PSG.
According to the LFP, the final table was decided on the basis of average points per game and that there was no possibility of ruling out the whole season without a champion, relegation, or promotion, as they did in the Netherlands.
PSG crowned Ligue
Before the season was stopped there were only 10 match-days left although PSG and Strasbourg both had a game in hand. As a result of the final league table decided by LFP, Marseille and Rennes have qualified for the Champions League next season, while fourth-placed Lille has qualified for the Europa League.
LFP, which oversees the top two divisions(Ligue 1 and Ligue 2), made this decision after its third meeting since Philippe’s lockdown exit strategy speech was presented to the French National Assembly.
In a statement, PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi dedicated the title to the healthcare staff and to all the everyday heroes on the front line whose commitment and self-sacrifice over many weeks have earned our deepest admiration.
Celebrations regarding the title, such as open bus parade in the city, will be done after social distancing measures are over.
